  6. I remember watching a documentary or something when I was little where this train was going through this beautiful and lush valley and I said I wanted to visit there one day. My relatives said that's in Sichuan and they would never dare to go there by train cause there are so many bandits and thieves on the trains. I was perplexed cause I had heard that China is much safer than the US and my family had traveled extensively in the US without even coming close to danger. More recently, Ialso went on a trip in the US with some Chinese students back in grad school and we stayed on the 4th or 5th floor of a hotel and wanted to leave the window open at night but they all looked at me like I'm insane. They said that they're afraid of ppl climbing the building to get into open windows which I never heard of happening in the US. My wife also had a good friend from high school get murdered at her workplace (a hospital) that was run by corrupt individuals and the murderer was never caught as a result. It soon became clear that the numbers on China's crime rate didn't add up. I also think the American media overreports on crime which makes it seem like a really unsafe place while China continues to censor reports of their crime. I always cringe when my inlaws visit and comment on how scared and unsafe they feel coming to America, esp after a mass shooting or other major crime.

  20. I just glad to see that my parents aren't alive to see what is happening to HK. They flee Taiwan by in 1959 after I was born because they were afraid something like this would happen. I live with my grandparents in HK until 1963. We moved to the states in 1969 and I always wanted to go back to HK to see where I lived. Now I will never go back. Thank god all my relatives have migrated out of HK. I just hope the people that is there can get out of HK before it get's really bad.

Laowhy, since you mentioned the USSR, I would like to add that many of the things you said about China and Nazi Germany also apply to the Soviet Union (such as being a one-party state, having no freedom of speech, using sports as a political propaganda tool, among other things). A key difference, however, between the USSR and China is that the USSR had a very closed and protecionist economy, and did very little trade when compared to modern China. In fact, China became so rich due to the vast amount of trade it does that it can now afford to export its censorship standards to the rest of the world. Since China is a very relevant market for many American companies, this means that these companies will often censor themselves so they can sell their products and services inside China. The USSR, on the other hand, wasn't a relevant market for U.S. companies, and this also meant that these companies couldn't care less about what the Soviet goverment thought of them. The Chinese goverment is VERY aware of this, and is using its economical influence to try to shape what people all around the world think of its rule. This is very evident in the movie industry, for example. During the 80's, we had movies like Rambo and Red Dawn, where the protagonists mowed down dozens of soviet soldiers, but nowadays there isn't a single Chinese villain in a major Hollywood production. Let's not forget that the 2011 Red Dawn remake changed its villains from Chinese to North Koreans in order to appease the Chinese government. The CCP is often portrayed in a very positive light in Hollywood (just take a look at the Transformers movies, for instance). The west is selling out the core values of its civilization (such as rule of law and freedom of speech) in exchange for cheap phones made in mainland China.
