Baptized, raised, and educated as a Catholic, I note that we were overdosed with doctrine, seasoned with a little church history, but almost completely starved of exposure to the considerable body of Catholic mystical texts.

  4. Excellent video Dr Sledge. I've been studying all aspects of ancient Egypt for over 40 years now and it's just wonderful to hear someone pronounce the words Djehuty, ogdoad and hekka. I can't add anything to your scholarly presentation here except the theory that I once read that the early ancient Egyptians may have noticed the marks that the ibis makes in the mud with its bill as it forages for food - suggesting writing. Please consider doing a video on The Book of Coming Forth by Day. btw I'm convinced now that you're a fellow metalhead. Cheers from South Australia.

  8. I was absolutely thinking of Hellraiser before you brought up the book! These themes are exactly what that series, and most horror in general, explore. I am also reminded of German Expressionism arising out of the first World War, which led to some of the earliest horror films as we might recognize them today. A lot of Expressionist film is what deeply influenced artists such as Rolly Crump and Tim Burton. And of course the Nazis, in their pro-war zeal, took anything that detailed the horrors of war and labeled it "degenerate art", which they had an exhibit of in 1937

  11. I spent a short time attending an evangelical church as a teenager in the early 1980s. The Satanic panic was definitely part of that church and their Sunday school training. And there's no way to avoid it, their prejudice against rock and roll was explicitly racist - to the point of depicting non-Europeans as jungle-dwelling devil worshippers. I don't recall anti-Semitism in that church, but I only attended for a short time. I think of it as a psychological inoculation against the type of brainwashing that these cults do to their members.

  12. RPG campaign idea: a scroll detailing the locations of hidden artifacts from your nation's glory days has surfaced and the party is on a mission to collect them. The first one is relatively easy to obtain but complications arise in tracking down the subsequent treasures. The quest giver might also have ulterior motives, and the party might have to deal with the consequences of gathering a collection of artifacts that grant such great power when assembled in just the right way. They might have the opportunity to indulge in this power themselves, and then they will have to contend with holding on to this power and what it does to them. It could go in a lot of ways depending on your group! Lots of opportunities for the players to make meaningful decisions about the way the plot goes.

I was first exposed to Blake's mythology and prophetic poetry when I rewatched Blade Runner earlier this year and decided to find out what Roy Batty meant when he said "Fiery the angels fell; deep thunder rolled around their shores; burning with the fires of Orc." That brought me to Blake's "America: A Prophecy": Fiery the Angels rose, & as they rose deep thunder roll'd Around their shores: indignant burning with the fires of Orc And Bostons Angel cried aloud as they flew thro' the dark night. I am glad today to finally learn who "Orc" is!

This episode was interesting and I will now ask my special trained dog to start searching for treasure in our garden.She is especially good in digging pits between my flowers - she never found a treasure though 😄 Still you never know. Maybe someone has buried some golden artefacts that were recovered from the temple in my backyard. It’s as good a place as any to start looking.

While I am no expert, by any means, I have been enamored of Japanese culture since I was a child, and have learned a thing or two. I can see the threads of Bushido, Shintoism, Buddhism and ancient historic Japanese paradigms running through Mishima-san's personal beliefs, and actions. It's like he embodies a kind of essential Japanese Superman. Thank you for bringing this fascinating character to my attention.

I’m a Catholic priest, and in seminary we were taught syncretism tends to be very destructive, although obviously there is a level of assimilation (as you pointed out) that does happen especially in prayer formulation and such. There's a "Rosicrucian" themed cafe in the Akihabara district of Tokyo (the area I usually stay in when visiting), called "Rosenkreuzer", although I think the commitment to the theme does not extend beyond the idea of "secret society". I haven't had the chance to go there yet, since there are so many other cafes in the area, many of which have themes related to Western Esotericism - Angels, Demons, Fairies, Vampires, Grimoires, Exorcists, etc. Even nun and shrine-maiden themed cafes.

I’m too young to have any cognizant memories of the Satanic Panic so I have an entirely hindsight view of the situation, but it’s always been fascinating to me that Michelle Remembers, a book that comes off as a grift to be perfectly honest, set off the powder keg like that.
