- machine learning is the general term for when computers learn from data
- there are lots of different ways ("algorithms") that machines can learn
- the algorithms can be grouped into supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement algorithms*

Hey @Vaishnavi Kalaivanan the modeling is already very well built in to Python, I wouldn’t spend much time at all building supervised learning models from scratch. Practically, it prob won’t get you much at all-and intellectually, it might be beneficial, but data science encompasses a vast space of ideas, so idk how much more brain power you’d enhance by deriving models compared to doing other things (that are prob more interesting cus they’re unexplored territory).
I was a math major in undergrad, so I was very keen on conceptually building the mathematics from the floor up and then coding it. The model derivations, and the degree to which I learned data science theory, was at least moderately a waste of time haha. Prob a big waste. I got out of grad school almost a year ago. I’m working as a data scientist in the Bay Area and the last year I’ve spent doing practical data science/data engineering research with legitimate big data taken from the real world has been astoundingly more useful and informative than all ucla grad school combined tbh. Building general, big data projects from scratch that are built upon real-world data, and which solve relatively fresh problems, is the way to go imo, and it’s a skill whose value is very likely to continue increasing dramatically.
As in, not well-defined, perfectly understood data with known errors and limitations, but data for which there are limited apriori assumptions/knowledge but flaws which manifest as severe limitations that you have to creatively both identify and reasonably solve. If you're able to have your own data center or server then you obviously don't need Azure. In my experience, it would be better to just run through Azure rather than your own sever specifically for maintenance and man power purposes. I worked with a guy and developed an app as well as a website and we built a server and ran it on our network. Went well, but in terms of power/electricity, UPS machines, redundancies for our network, growing potential for the amount of users, storage that keeps growing etc. It takes a massive load of further expenses as well as extra man power and a lot of monitoring. The monitoring alone is a job on it's own. With Azure, you can basically just set back and relax while everything is just run through their services. In terms of costs it would actually end up cheaper for you to use Azure than to build your own server or data center. Even if you have the costs and facilities, like I did, in the end it wasn't really worth it, because services like Azure are around. There are tons of big companies that can build their own servers etc. but it's not worth it when you can just run everything through Azure. Hope this helps answer your question.
