Israel wipes out 80 per cent of Syria’s military, including its entire navy
#breakingnews #syria #israel #israelsyriawar
The entire Syrian navy has been decimated in an attack by Israel, with 80 per cent of the Assad regime’s military destroyed in the past two days.
After two days of relentless bombing, Israel has destroyed Syria’s entire navy and crippled the country’s other key military assets.
The Israeli Defence Force has carried out 350 strikes of “strategic targets” since Saturday afternoon as Syrian opposition rebels seized control of Damascus and brought an end to the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad.
In an operation dubbed ‘Bashan Arrow’, the IDF first took out air defences before shifting focus to weapons stockpiles, armouries and missile production facilities in the capital as well as Homs, Tartus, Latakia and Plymyra.
Overnight, the Israeli Navy destroyed 15 vessels in ports on the coast, which formed virtually the entirety of Syria’s naval force.
As a result of the two-day campaign, an estimated 80 per cent of the former regime’s defence force capabilities have been destroyed, the IDF said, to keep it “out of the hands of extremists”.
“The IDF has acted in the last few days to attack and destroy strategic capabilities that threaten the state of Israel,” Defence Minister Israel Katz said.
Under Assad’s rule, Syria became a key ally of Iran and a thoroughfare for weapons sent to terrorist groups, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel has said.
Its key concern since the fall of the regime has been that Syrian weapons could be seized by “hostile” forces in the country.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has extended a tentative olive branch to Syrian rebels, saying he “would like to form relations with the new regime”, while issuing a stern warning.
“If this regime allows Iran to re-establish itself in Syria, or allows the transfer of Iranian weapons or any other weapons to Hezbollah, or attacks us — we will respond forcefully and we will exact a heavy price from it,” Mr Netanyahu said in a video statement.

The best commercials of Super Bowl 2025
The Super Bowl 2025 commercials brought star power, humor, and unforgettable moments to the big game.
#breakingnews #superbowl #superbowlcommercials #celebrity #entertainment #sport #nfl
Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal reunited in a Hellmann's ad, bringing back their classic When Harry Met Sally chemistry, while The Muppets brought their signature charm to a fun-filled Booking.com campaign. Pringles delivered laughs with Adam Brody, Nick Offerman, James Harden, and Chiefs coach Andy Reid, all rocking mustaches in a playful nod to the brand’s iconic shape.
Bud Light kept the party going with Post Malone and Shane Gillis, while Uber Eats turned to Matthew McConaughey to remind viewers why convenience is key. Over in the kitchen, Gordon Ramsay and Pete Davidson brought their comedic chemistry to a HexClad cookware spot, while Häagen-Dazs leaned into action-star appeal with Vin Diesel. Little Caesars delivered big laughs thanks to Eugene Levy, whose expressive eyebrows became the unlikely stars of the ad.
Meanwhile, Mountain Dew delivered one of the most memorable moments with Seal—yes, the singer—transformed into an actual seal via CGI, performing a parody of his hit Kiss From a Rose.
With a mix of nostalgia, comedy, and celebrity cameos, this year’s Super Bowl ads once again proved why they’re as much a highlight as the game itself.

Multiple deaths after New Year ‘terror attack’ in New Orleans
#breakingnews #neworleans #us
At least 15 people are dead and dozens injured after a man, allegedly 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an American-born citizen and military veteran who grew up in Texas, drove a pick-up truck into New Year’s revellers in the American city New Orleans. The incident is being treated, by law enforcement, as an act of terrorism.
“After hitting the crowd, he exited the vehicle and fired upon local law enforcement. Law enforcement returned fire and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the FBI said in a statement.
“Two law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a local hospital.”
An ISIS flag was found in the vehicle, a pick-up truck, which law enforcement believes Jabbar rented. According to The Associated Press, police also found guns and pipe bombs inside the pick-up truck, hidden within coolers.
Those explosives had been wired for remote detonation, and a corresponding remote control was also found in the vehicle.
Meanwhile other explosives were found in the city’s French Quarter. Surveillance footage reportedly shows three men, and a woman, placing “one of multiple improvised explosive devices”.
In that vein, law enforcement believes the suspect may not have acted alone.
“We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible,” said FBI assistant special agent in charge of the investigation, Alethea Duncan, at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon, US time.
“We are aggressively running down every lead, including those of his known associates.”
The pick-up truck in question, a Ford electric vehicle, had been rented via the app Turo. Its owner, another 42-year-old man, had listed it for rent and is now speaking to police.
“We are heartbroken to learn that one of our hosts’ vehicles was involved in this awful incident,” Turo’s vice president of communications, Steve Webb, said in a statement.
“We are actively partnering with the FBI. We are not currently aware of anything in this guest’s background that would have identified him as a trust and safety threat to us at the time of the reservation.”

Delta plane crash: Outrage over 'selfish' passenger act
#breakingnews #planecrash #delta #worldnews
Images of scared passengers evacuating the upturned Delta airlines plane that crash-landed in Toronto with personal belongings like backpacks and neck pillows have been blasted.
If you are a regular flyer you will likely be familiar with the important line during the safety demonstration on takeoff that informs passengers to leave their belongings behind in the event of an emergency.
This is so baggage carried on to the flight does not impede or delay the evacuation. Simply put, it’s quicker to get people out if they are not carrying stuff. Bags and other items can also damage emergency equipment such as escape slides.
Passengers have filmed their desperate escape from the cabin of a Delta... See more
On Monday afternoon, local time, Delta flight 4819 crash landed and flipped on its back in harsh winter conditions at Canada’s largest airport.
Four crew and 76 passengers were on board the Bombardier CRJ 900 plane, which was arriving from Minneapolis, US. Fortunately, they all managed to escape alive.
Footage of the disastrous landing showed flames and black smoke before the aircraft flipped belly-up on the runway. “Drop everything. Drop it,” a crew member could be heard saying.
Yet, passengers were still seen climbing out the aircraft with backpacks, drink bottles, carrying coats and neck pillows.
Speaking after the deadly Japan Airlines crash in Tokyo in January last year, expert Sonya Brown said passengers not taking their carry-on baggage was key to the fast evacuation that took place.
Ms Brown, a senior lecturer in aerospace design at the University of New South Wales, said the more people who leave their belongings behind — the better people’s chance of escaping.
“We have the least chance of incidents if people aren’t carrying things. Also, if someone picks up their bags they could actually damage some of the emergency equipment – for example, the emergency inflatable slides ” she told the publication.
“So it is really important that people do leave their belongings behind.”

Body found off Sydney cliffs during Lilie James murder manhunt
A body has been found in water off the cliffs in Vaucluse, Sydney during a manhunt for suspect Paul Thijssen, accused of murdering Lilie James at St Andrew's Cathedral School.
Lilie James, 21, was found dead in a gym bathroom at St Andrew’s Cathedral School just before midnight on Wednesday, after her ex-boyfriend Paul Thijssen rang triple-0 and told operators there was a body they should investigate. It’s understood Miss James was beaten to death with a hammer, with police on Thursday stating she had suffered serious head injuries.
Both Miss James and Thijssen were employed at the school, working in the sports department. Miss James was a water polo coach, while Thijssen - a former student - was employed as a sports assistant.
It was revealed they had been in a relationship for five weeks when Miss James broke things off. Prior to the horrific killing, Thijssen can be seen on CCTV following Miss James into a gym bathroom at St Andrew’s Cathedral School about 7pm on October 25th 2023.
That same CCTV camera shows Thijssen leaving the area well over an hour later, while Ms James never comes out of the bathroom. Almost four hours later, Thijssen called police, with a trace leading officers to Diamond Bay Reserve in Vaucluse.

South Korean President Yoon arrested in standoff
#breakingnews #southkorea #martiallaw #yoonsukyeol
Impeached South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested over his failed bid to impose martial law, hours after hundreds of investigators and police raided his residence.
Mr Yoon, who faces charges of insurrection, had resisted arrest since his imposition of martial law plunged the country into its worst political crisis in decades in December.
At the time, Mr Yoon directed soldiers to storm parliament in an unsuccessful attempt to stop lawmakers voting down his move.
Over 3,000 officers were earlier deployed to the residence to arrest the conservative politician for a second time.
After hours of standoff, authorities announced Mr Yoon had been arrested and the impeached leader released a prerecorded video message.
“I decided to respond to the Corruption Investigation Office,” Yoon said in a prerecorded video message, adding that he did not accept the legality of the investigation but was complying “to prevent any unfortunate bloodshed.”
Yoon, who is the first sitting president in the nation’s history to be arrested, could face the death penalty or life in jail if he is found guilty of insurrection.
South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party said on Wednesday the arrest was the beginning of restoring order to the country after weeks of political turmoil.

Historic AC/DC House Demolished by Accident, Leaving Fans Shocked and Heartbroken
In an unforeseen and deeply upsetting twist, the historic house once tied to the legendary rock band AC/DC has been accidentally demolished, sending shockwaves through the music community and fans worldwide. The property, a cultural landmark cherished for its connection to the band’s early days, was mistakenly torn down due to what officials have called a "tragic administrative error."
The house, which had become a pilgrimage site for diehard AC/DC fans, stood as a tangible reminder of the band's roots and influence on rock music history. Now, with its unexpected destruction, efforts are already underway to investigate the blunder, as preservationists and fans alike lament the loss of an irreplaceable piece of music heritage.
Developers have apologised for an ‘oversight’ which led to the home of AC/DC being accidentally bulldozed. Could this be a rallying call to better protect cultural landmarks? Fans are demanding answers—and justice for rock history.

President Biden warns ‘soul of America’ is still at stake in farewell address
#breakingnews #biden #america #president #trump #ovaloffice
US President Joe Biden warned that the “soul of America” is still at stake, as he prepared to deliver his farewell address to the nation before the return to power of Donald Trump.
The 82-year-old Democrat made his primetime speech from the Oval Office of the White House in which he touted the legacy of his single four-year term.
In a letter previewing his remarks, Mr Biden took an implicit swipe at Republican Trump.
“I ran for president because I believed that the soul of America was at stake. The very nature of who we are was at stake. And, that’s still the case,” Mr Biden said in the letter.
“History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands,” he said.
“We just have to keep the faith and remember who we are.”
Mr Biden said the United States was stronger than four years ago, when it “stood in a winter of peril” after Trump’s chaotic first term, the Covid pandemic and what he called “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War”.
Mr Biden was sworn in just days after the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters trying to overturn his election loss.
He did not mention Mr Trump by name, but his words clearly echoed previous speeches in which he said he decided to run in the 2020 election because America’s “soul” was at risk from Mr Trump and his supporters, and that Mr Trump was a threat to democracy.

Kevin Spacey blasts Guy Pearce in furious video statement
#breakingnews #kevinspacey #guypearce #entertainment #hollywood
Actor Kevin Spacey has published a furious video statement addressed to Guy Pearce, demanding the Aussie actor “grow up” and stop playing the victim after Pearce made allegations Spacey ‘targeted’ him with inappropriate behaviour on set of the 1997 film LA Confidential.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Pearce claimed that Spacey harassed him for months on the set of the thriller. Pearce, 57, claimed that the only days he felt “safe” on set where when fellow Aussie actor Simon Baker was present: “[Kevin] focuses on [Simon] because he was 10 times prettier than I am.”
“He targeted me, no question,” an audibly emotional Pearce claimed, revealing that years later he broke down sobbing when he saw that Spacey, 65, had been accused of unwanted sexual advances by other men.
Spacey, who came out as gay in 2017 when the first of the allegations surfaced, has either been acquitted or has had charges dropped in all sexual misconduct cases against him.
In a post on X this morning, Spacey addressed his former co-star directly.
“Guy Pearce, I’ve now read the comments that you made about me, and while I would have preferred not to have to play this out in the media, you obviously have your own reasons for wanting to do exactly that,” he said.
Spacey argued that the pair had worked together “a long time ago” and that if he’d upset Pearce, they could have worked it out privately rather than Pearce airing it in the media.
“You really want to know what my response is? Grow up. Did you also, by the way, tell the press that a year after we shot L.A. Confidential, you flew to Savannah, Georgia, while I was shooting Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, just to spend time with me. I mean, did you tell the press that, too? Or does that not fit into the victim narrative you have going?”
“I apologise that I didn’t get the message that you don’t like spending time with me. I mean, maybe there was another reason. I don’t know. But that doesn’t make any sense that you would have just been leading me on, right?” he said.
Spacey finished his statement by mocking Pearce for voicing his allegations now, almost 30 years after the alleged incidents had taken place.
“Here you are now on a mission some 28 years later, after I’d been through hell and back to do what? Just in time to stop the bad guy, huh? Is that what’s going on here? What took you so long? Did your horse run out of gas? I mean, you want to have a conversation? I’m happy to do so. Any time, any place. We can even do it here, live on X if you like. I’ve got nothing to hide. But, guy, you need to grow up. You are not a victim.”

Trump’s Golden Age: How it will impact Australia and global politics
#trump #politics #usa #australia
What would a second Donald Trump presidency mean for the United States, its democracy, and the world? In this deep-dive interview, Bruce Wolpe, senior fellow at the United States Studies Centre and author of What Trump’s Second Term Means for Australia, breaks down the potential global impact of Trump's return to power.
Could America drift towards authoritarianism? How might Trump’s policies reshape international trade, relations with China, and Australia's alliance with the U.S.?
From his foreign policy stance to his potential for political retribution, we discuss the global reaction to Trump's leadership. While leaders like Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Viktor Orbán may welcome his return, others fear the potential unraveling of the post-WWII world order. Could Trump use executive power to sideline Congress and the courts? Will he push America further into isolationism, or will his "America First" approach lead to trade wars, military tensions, and democratic backsliding?
We also break down what this means for Australia. Could our trade relationship with the U.S. come under threat? How will Prime Minister Anthony Albanese navigate a relationship with a president who favors strongmen over traditional allies? How billionaire Clive Palmer's ‘Trumpet of Patriots’ will channel Trump
#breakingnews #clivepalmer #trump #politics #australia #election
Australian billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer has decided to channel US President Donald Trump, rebranding his political party to the Trumpet of Patriots, and plans to “Make Australia Great Again” and “drain the swamp in Canberra”.
Billionaire Clive Palmer has launched a new political party inspired by the politics of US President Donald Trump, vowing to “Make Australia Great Again”. The mining magnate is the chairman of his new party, Trumpet of Patriots, which will run on Trump-inspired policies and aims to sway voters away from the major parties as well as the Greens and teals.
Mr Palmer praised Mr Trump and said Trumpet of Patriots would rally for policies like a reduction in immigration, banning trans athletes, and rescinding Kevin Rudd’s posting as Australia’s ambassador to the US.
“The party believes in the policies of Donald Trump, which is shown to be effective in bringing management back on track,” he said.
“Peter Dutton has stated the he’s no Donald Trump, and we agree with him. Albanese presided over declining standard of living for our country every year he served as prime minister.
“Australia needs Trump policies. Australians want them.”
Trumpet of Patriots will aim to run candidates across all 150 electorates and senate seats; however, no decisions have been made on preferencing. Mr Palmer said decisions would be “up to policies”. He said the party’s centrepiece policy would be to “cut government waste,” citing the Elon Musk-fronted Department of Government Efficiency in the US.
He also vowed to spend “whatever is required” to boost the party’s election chances.
“I’m more than happy to spend my funds on something productive, defending the right of free speech, and whatever is required to be spent, it will be spent,” he said.
Mr Palmer’s political pitch follows the voluntary deregistration of his former United Australia Party in late 2022. Anthony Albanese dashed the political effectiveness of Mr Palmer’s new party while acknowledging people were entitled to run.
“A bloke who spends over $100m to deliver one senate seat with a bloke who sits in the corner and just engages in conspiracy theories I don’t think represents value for money,” the Prime Minister said.

LA fires cast doubt on Los Angeles Olympics in 2028
As the LA fire continues to rage across the city, experts have questioned whether Los Angeles can still host the next Summer Olympic Games.
California Governor Gavin Newsom insisted the city would be ready despite the tragedy.
“My humble position, and it’s not just being naively optimistic, that only reinforces the imperative of moving quickly, doing it in the spirit of collaboration and co-operation,” Governor Newsom told NBC News.
Others are less convinced – among them conservative commentator, Charlie Kirk, who has called for the Games to be cancelled.
“If you can’t fill a fire hydrant, you aren’t qualified to host the Olympics,” he wrote on X.
Others are less convinced. Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk called for the Games to be cancelled, writing: “If you can’t fill a fire hydrant, you aren’t qualified to host the Olympics.”
The wildfires are continuing to spread and the death toll is mounting, devastating entire neighbourhoods.
Current estimates for LA 2028 are at around $US7 billion, not including the astronomical fire damages.
So will LA host the 2028 Olympics? Here’s what you need to know.

Trump's health pick RFK Jr grilled over vaccines, abortion in Senate
#breakingnews #rfkjr #trump #vaccine #abortion #health #senate
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. came under withering attack from Democratic senators, including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren over his history of promoting vaccine misinformation and his sudden embrace of anti-abortion policies during a high-stakes confirmation hearing to become President Donald Trump's health secretary.
But Kennedy, a former environmental lawyer and son of the late US Senator Robert F Kennedy, has become a politically polarising figure and one of Trump’s most controversial cabinet nominees.
Critics denounced him for a slew of past false statements questioning the safety of vaccines, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the start of Wednesday’s hearing, the top Democrat on the panel, Senator Ron Wyden, said Kennedy has “embraced conspiracy theories, quacks [and] charlatans, especially when it comes to safety and efficacy of vaccines”.
“He has made it his life’s work to sow doubt and discourage parents from getting their kids life-saving vaccines. It has been lucrative for him and put him on the verge of immense power,” Wyden said.
Other Democrats also pointed at some of Kennedy’s past statements to question his ability to lead HHS, which oversees healthcare programmes in the country.
Senator Michael Bennet asked the nominee about his prior assertion that the COVID-19 pandemic was engineered to target white and Black people, while sparing Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. Kennedy responded that he was citing federal research, without elaborating.
But Republicans, who control the 100-seat Senate, have largely supported Kennedy’s nomination.
All of Trump’s cabinet picks have been confirmed so far, with Vice President JD Vance casting a tie-breaking vote last week to push through Pete Hegseth’s confirmation as the new head of the Pentagon.
Kennedy, who will face another hearing before a separate Senate committee on Thursday, needs 50 votes to be confirmed.
Kennedy ran as an independent in the 2024 presidential race before dropping out and endorsing Trump in August.
He said on Wednesday that, if confirmed, he plans to deliver on a promise to “Make America Healthy Again” — a play on Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

Google Maps will change Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America in US
Google Maps will change the name of "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" once it is officially updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System, Google said in an X post on Monday (January 28). Nyima Pratten reports.
The change will be visible for U.S. users, but the name will remain "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico.
Outside of the two countries, users will see both names on Google Maps.
U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the name change as part of a flurry of executive actions hours after taking office last week, making good on a campaign promise.
"America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world. A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America."
The Trump administration's Interior Department officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Friday.
Mexicans Reuters spoke to on the Gulf coast rejected Trump's bid to rename it last week.
“Honestly, it’s wrong – because the Gulf of Mexico will always be the Gulf of Mexico, that’s the way it is, and it doesn’t need to change.”
Google has applied the same locale-based labeling conventions to other locations subject to geographical naming disputes.
