  6. I have some experience with larger and bench top pharmaceutical lyophilizers. The end of drying cycle is triggered by increase in the product temperature. This happens when there is no water to evaporate in the product being dried and the heat being supplied to product is no longer being used for evaporating the water, since is all gone, and the products starts heating. This spike in the tray temperature is picked by the sensors on the tray ( as you showed on one of the trays) and used to take the cycle to the next stage. In commercial units; this sensor may sit in one of the product container or on tray for accurate measurement. So in the unit you showed the decision is made on the basis on the sensor on one of the trays ( and the state of drying of the food on that tray). It also means that having different food type in one lot may not be a good idea, as you have experienced. Enjoyed the video!!

  8. One of my favorite parts of Car & Driver magazine’s long term test fleet recaps is the maintenance cost section and, specifically, the cost of replacing a headlight housing. Most are upwards of $1700 now which is just crazy when you can get 90% of the performance for literally 1% of the cost with a seal beam setup.

  15. I’m surprised sony didn’t just overdrive a mini CRT to show live output from the tape head. It must lose a fair amount of light with the prism setup, too. I am impressed with the video quality though, it’s pretty darn sharp when you focus.

  16. I just gave this a test on my US model Kia EV6 using an OBD dongle to measure the brake light value and sure enough, it behaves exactly as you described. This is even after the ELE292/SA533 software update for i-Pedal. Hyundai really needs to get this fixed for all their eGMP vehicles!

  17. I actually work in HVAC direct to consumer sales. I completely agree with you! Heat pumps are fantastic for people who don't need a ton of heat, and are reasonable for people even in higher latitudes so long as their home is properly insulated. Also, installers are sometimes extremely greedy. We look at real costs and almost always sell at lower than our competitors. I wish more companies would be honest and reasonable in their pricing.

  22. I started out thinking I’d need a 50A L2 circuit, and then I actually got the EV and found I only need to charge an average of 4 hrs on L1 per night to meet my needs. The biggest issue we’ve ran into is remote road trips, like visiting national parks. There are some DCFCs in unexpected places, but I definitely have range anxiety when we’re headed out camping. The pro-tip there is RV parks, if you’re willing to camp in one every few nights, because you can just bring your EVSE with you and charge at L2. I hope RV parks start catching on to this and advertising it better, there’s an untapped market of people who want to charge for a few hours but won’t eat an entire RV spot overnight.

  28. A level 1 charger at my house is WAY more than my needs for commuting to and from work. I don’t understand why people don’t get this. Yes, it’s slow, but the 120v EVSE that comes with most EVs is WAY more than most people’s needs. I get something like 7 miles per hour of level 1 charge, that’s really significant. With my base model 2013 leaf and it’s 24kwh battery (and a 1.4kw EVSE), I charge 6% of my battery per hour just with a standard outdoor wall outlet at my apartment with a 100’ extension cord (you need a 14 gauge 3 conductor cord at 100’, this is extremely important). Yeah, it’s slow, but I can charge literally 20 hours a day, and at work they don’t even charge me to plug in! I always get in my car at 100% charge. Every time. This isn’t tough to do. Also, side note, your video on level 1 charging convinced me to buy this car. Thank you. I couldn’t be happier. $8500 well spent.

  35. If you're wondering about the weird hybrid mentioned at about the 40 second mark, these are roped hydraulic elevators. This arrangement allows for extended travel. For the two pistons, this arrangement is used so the hydraulic components stay above ground and avoid issues with burying the hydraulic cylinder (such as leaks going undetected in ground, etc).

  40. If you have to use the condensate-pump method for getting rid of your indoor unit's condensation, you'll want to keep an eye on it. Make sure there's a switch installed (AND FUNCTIONING) that shuts off power to the ENTIRE SYSTEM if the pump's collection container fills up. My system had such a switch, but that switch failed in the closed position. The condensate pump failed. The collection container filled up. And kept going. And going. And going... Insurance doesn't cover water damage from broken condensate pumps. Ask me how I know.

  41. This brings up a great point. It totally makes sense for places like Sheetz or Speedway that have full service food and beverages. To those places, gasoline is at best low margin and could be a loss leader. They want people to come in and buy stuff. It seems like AC or DC charging at a "pump" would offer the same financial benefits to those sorts of businesses. I wonder why they haven't jumped on yet.

  42. First, thank you for mentioning the Ford Focus Electric! I love my FFE and wish more people knew about them. Second, I politely disagree with the NEMA 6-50 recommendation. NEMA 14-50 is a better solution only because it is very common at campgrounds and RV parks. This means you’ve got an existing infrastructure that is quite ubiquitous in rural areas and allows EVs to travel further afield than the traditional DCFC network goes today.

  49. 6:07 The other-other clever part of modern toasters, is that the yellow wire is connected part-way along the heating element, which reduces the voltage to say 12 Volts. The diode then rectifies that to power the circuit, a bit like a tap on a transformer. ;) (obviously it's not isolated from the mains, but it doesn't matter as long as the outside controls are insulated.)

  50. From an electronic point of view, there was very little about Betamax that was measurably superior to VHS. There was almost nothing about the technology that you could point to and say "Yes, because Beta machines have this or do *that*, the picture ought to be much better than VHS". Yes, Beta had a very slight quality advantage over VHS (at least before 30 years had taken their toll on the hardware!), but it was never any more than that. The idea that Beta picture quality was somehow night-and-day superior to VHS is a myth that, hopefully, has finally been laid to rest. Although I wonder if people were comparing SP Betamax to LP VHS? In which case, clearly, Betamax would have been very obviously superior.
