How do i become a paleontologist? (Classes and stuff like that)

At LSU we had a $100 bet/reward for whoever could find a bone from T. Walleri in Louisiana. We knew of the fossils in Texas and Florida, but we had never found any as far as we knew. So if you're in Louisiana and you find a big hardy bird bone, let the folks at LSU know...there's a $100 waiting for you ;) Also, go mammals!

6:10 wait I thought starfish was a deuterostome and the earthworm is a protostome. Is this a mistake?
84
It seems to me as though snakes share a common ancestor with mosasaurs and varanids.
83
I knew nothing about trilobites before this video. Thanks :D

I've been subscribed since day one after seeing this channel on PBS's Spacetime. I love this channel and the subject matter but I feel like the format would really benefit from a slightly longer duration. Obviously the episodes don't need to be full length thirty minute features but at the current 5-6 minute average time, it is just enough time to get interesting and whet your appetite before it ends frustratingly short. I think the channel would really be perfect at the 10 minute mark and the level of detail that implies. I know it's still a fairly new channel and this isn't related to this specific video but I just wanted to leave feedback. Hopefully this is something that changes over time. Cheers. I love what you guys are doing and look forward to it every week.

Eons always has the perfect blend of humour and scientific info!!

Very recently, Halszkaraptor escuilliei, a new Dromaeosaurid dinosaur, was described from the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia. After confirming the specimen was genuine (it has a shady past), the researchers found it to be semiaquatic. We probably should have mentioned Halszkaraptor in this episode, but we didn’t due to the newness of the specimen. There hasn’t been much time for the scientific community to review the conclusions put forth in the report. If you’d like to check out the manuscript and do your own peer review, it can be found here: https://www.nature.com/articles/nature24679 (KM)

Kallie is my hero! This video was fantastic. Viva la Science!

Question- isn't the process of one species evolving into two different ones called divergent evolution, not parallel evolution?
69
Great episode, and I took the survey; I hope it helps!
65
Dear PBS Eons. You answer so many questions i never knew existed! :D thanks for all the good work.
59
I learned two new things: Arteodactyls and ceteceans, and that they are somewhat related. Quite fascinating stuff.
53
You know what one of my favorite things about Sci Show and PBS Eons and the rest of your projects is? You guys are all huge dorks. And I mean that in the best way, as a huge dork myself. You guys love this stuff, you love learning about it and you love teaching it, and you also can't keep a straight face when you share those awful jokes and puns at the end. I just love your "oh goddammit" faces. XD

What amazes me about any history before written records is, how scientists can make pretty good (and sometimes less good) assumptions about how animals behaved. There's a whole lot we don't know about anything, but by studying fossils and present day life we can assume a lot about how the past might have lived. Like how we can assume that the sabretooth cat was probably an ambush predator, even though no feline today is - and still those teeth are insane! Or we assume that Velociraptor species hunted like some birds of prey. We won't ever really know for sure how the past actually acted, but our stories about it adhere more and more to the rules and logic of nature.
45
I also am sincerely mind-blown to learn mosasaurs were lizards.
44
So much change in 20 million years. Other life forms have used essentially the same size and shape for hundreds of millions of years. Thank you for this edifying video.
40
Dear PBS Eons and Eonites, Thank you, I love you. That's it, that's all I need to say. Stay safe, sane, and healthy.
40
I clicked like on this vid, but..., I actually loved it! Thanks for helping me learn.
36
Such a great video! And I’m loving the intelligent conversations and debates happening in the comments haha such a difference from typical channels’ comment sections :)
33
Thank you, PBS Eons and all of PBS Digital Studios, for your easy-to-understand and equally entertaining videos. In this new normal society where social distancing is key, YouTube channels that make learning easier for students are heroes of the educational system. Looking forward to more and more great videos!
31
Awesome video! It's absolutely mind boggling to think of all that has existed before us and all we cannot possibly know. So, thank you for helping us learn what is known.
31
This was a fantastic awesome super cool tremendous brilliant video!!!
30
Thank you for including that recognition of indigenous people and the sometimes unapproved digging and fossil removal.
27
Pleistocene megafauna, please. And the Great American Interchange. This was awesome, as always. It makes my day every time I see a notification about a new Eons vid. :-)
21
so would it be possible to find that sort of biocarbon on other planets? Like do they look for it on for example mars?
19
I've enjoyed many previous videos on PBS Eons. But this video has motivated me to become a Patreon supporter. Thank you PBS Eons for the work that you do.
19
That giggle though :D
18
I heard that too, thinking, I'm there right now in Liaoning. Road trip for fossils and archaeological sites. I might even visit one of these fossil locations in the next couple days.

I have watched every video you had on your channel, and now that I realised that I saw every video, I realise I watched them all with great interest and fascination. The only bad thing is that there aren't any more videos. Therefore, I'm subbing! Congratz, PBS Eons

Ayyyyyyyyyy this was part of my mom's graduate research! She was looking at the tubes left by rising plumes and sinking crust and how they might impede or encourage crust recycling!

Also support your local museums!

These videos make me happy to be a Patreon supporter today of PBS Eons

They have a video that is sort of related called "The Rise and Fall of the Bone-Crushing Dogs." They don't mention bear dogs specifically but it is worth watching if you haven't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZhxCUay5ks

No wooly mammoths at Hot Springs. Just once I'd like to see this channel get through a video without a mind-boggling error. https://www.mammothsite.org/
