This was encouraging. I love reading. And I watch way too many Booktube channels. It's so silly, but I have started to wonder what's wrong with me that I can only read an average of 20 books a year, while so many people boast of at least double that. My best year was 42. But that was unusual. Am I such a slow reader? I am reading all the time! There are books piled everywhere around my apartment! What is wrong with me? But you're right. When I do fly through books, I can't remember what they're about. What's the point? I love reading long books that I savor and live with for weeks or months. When I take my time and read in different settings, I remember things more because I have physical "markers", if that makes sense. I remember reading The Return of the King and crying on the train. I remember going to babysit and it unexpectedly rained and my poor paperback copy of Jane Eyre got soaked and I put it on the kitchen table to dry. I am now remembering my reread of J.I. Packer's Knowing God on the train and during the walk from the train station to the church on Sundays. It works better with physical books, but I'm even starting to get better with ebooks. (I'm actually realizing these things as I am writing this out, so thank you!)

I can't believe this is now accepted. All I can say is, please don't give in to it.

@bailey1368 Oh, I agree! Always comparing yourself with others is a trap. It's pointless. Whether it's reading or any other type of activity, we're always going to find someone who is ahead of us or behind us. Looking at others might help with inspiration and thinking about general goals. But in the end, if you're not improving yourself, what does it matter? Yourself is the only person you have any control over anyway! I think the key is 1) consistency and 2) having realistic goals. When it comes down to it, it's more beneficial to read a few books a month or even "just" one, and really get something out of them, than it is to read 20 books and barely remember them. I need to remind myself of all these things. Take care!

I am a Christian, so it's important to me that I read the Bible each day. Not just random verses, but going through it book by book. I am grateful that I am naturally a person who loves reading. But due to life situations in recent years, I'd been struggling at times. I found a Bible reading plan. Having that structure was helpful for a while. But at some point, I realized I was focusing too much about having all the little boxes checked off by the end of the year. I ended up getting rid of it. I'm also not keeping track of how many times I read through the Old Testament/New Testament or the entire Bible. My focus should be reading through some chapters every day. Whether I get through it in 1 year or 3 years, it shouldn't matter. It's more beneficial to read through a paragraph and really meditate on it and pray about it and allow it to work in my life than it is to fly through the whole Bible in a few months just to complete an artificial reading plan. I don't think God's going to be examining our reading plans! The important thing is daily time with Him and letting His Word change me, as it should. Thanks for the good reminder.

Please try to focus on the students that are doing well! Or at least who WANT to learn, who WANT to improve, who WANT to be challenged. Everything these days is dumbed down to the lowest common denominator for those who refuse to put in the work. (I'm GenX and I hated that, even when I was in school all those decades ago.) All this does is demoralize the good students. Please don't forget them. Even if it's just one person in the whole class, please continue to focus on them and challenge them. Otherwise, they will give up. I know good teachers have a heart to "reach" the other students. But, honestly, they ALWAYS get all the attention and the good students are ignored. I promise you, they will eventually give up. I did. And I still do.

Wow! I did not know that. So glad I have the DVDs... even though I don't have a functional DVD player at the moment. At least I know they can't take it from me. How is that not theft if they don't reimburse you in some way? Wicked! Tricksy! False!

That's horrifying!

Oh, I love this idea! I don't think I could do a whole day. But maybe a few hours. I did not grow up in a reading family. To this day, I always feel guilty for reading, like I'm lazy and should be doing something productive. Even if work and chores and every other obligation is done, I can only read a short time before I have to stop and go clean the bathroom or do something else, "useful". (Even if everything is already clean. Yeah,I know. It's crazy.)

You are pretty much me! I'm just a couple of years younger than you. I've been a huge readers since very early childhood. I want to say I was I learned to read even before I went to school. Not positive, but I think so. I have seen my attention span plummet through the years. For family / health situation reasons, I cannot be without my smartphone. I have to have it on me all the time. But I'm telling you, once my father is no longer living, it's going away. If I could dump it in the ocean right now, I would. And, yes, I cannot imagine how it is for people who have grown up not knowing anything other than CONSTANT distraction. It's horrific. We must do something to stop it. The problem is... I don't know what.

I haven't even started the video yet and I'm already angry. "College students are telling their professors they can't read whole books. " Are you serious?! I would give ANYTHING to have been able to go to college! And these illiterate morons can't read a whole book?! Why are they in college in the freaking first place?! I am raging. I'd better stop before I damage my keyboard. That is how angry just reading that first sentence has me - again, before I even watch this video. I am SICK of ignorant people! 8 seconds in. If they can't read books, they don't belong there. Give their spot to someone who can. I am so sick of this.

Oh, I loved the movie and want to read the story. I found the premise fascinating.

I haven't watched new TV in years. If that's the case, I'm glad I haven't missed much. You are correct on the other part as well. I do transcription for work. People can barely speak in full sentences. They cannot follow a logical train of thought, much less speak in one. Every few moments they say, "like" and "you know" and "um/uh" and my "favorite", starting and ENDING sentences with the word, "so." How that drives me nuts. Unbearable, having to type out such drivel! People are so stupid that they don't even seem to understand what it means to ask a question! They are told and even clearly explained that they are to *ask questions*, like you do in court, in cross examination. Not statements. Not comments. Not responses. QUESTIONS. They can't do it. I used to think people were just being difficult on purpose. I am to the point where I am really thinking... they don't UNDERSTAND what means to ask a question. It's horrifying.

I've never heard of these last two or even that author. Thanks, I will look them up.

@difference018 @difference018 Unless you have a genuine type of disorder, this is a problem.

@Otto500206 Then why are they in university at all?! I genuinely don't understand this! I always wanted to university because I figured I would finally be among other people who love reading and writing and all of that! But if they people there, don't... why are they there? What are they doing all day? I don't understand!

I love it when illiterate people don't even see that they're illiterate.

Ancillary Justice If there's no distinction between the sexes, then why didn't the author just use, "it"? "She" has a meaning. It means female. I wouldn't have minded this sort of thing some years ago. But now that real life is erasing the sexes with this "trans' anti-biology insanity (or pretending to, since it's a biological impossibility) I don't need that in my sci fi as well. I don't know if the author is pushing that idea in real life.

This is really interesting, thank you!

This was horrifying. I'm glad Booktube exists. At least I know some people are reading. What that percentage is compared to the rest of the population, I don't know.

I just learned about this from another channel. It's no surprise. Scumbags. That's why I use Kindle as a secondary thing. It's mainly for books that I either already have in hard copy, or that I don't necessarily mind if they "disappear." I buy very few digital items. I wait for the cheapie sales and digital "bind ups" and such. None of this stuff is mine. None of it!

@victoza9232 @victoza9232 This is why I force myself to try to type accurately, even when texting. I see my language disappearing before my eyes. It's horrifying.

I avoid them most of the time these days. I had a gift card from work, which is the only reason I've been using it lately.

Blaspheming and insulting the Lord? No thank you. But what else did I expect with that channel name. Disgusting.

What year was this? I'm trying to see how long this has been going on.

Will there be spoilers in this video? I want to read several of these books. "Thinky" Sci Fi is my favorite!

@_jared Cool, thanks. I adored Hyperion, btw. That book still haunts me.

Get lost.

THANK YOU! Nobody addresses this point! I always wanted to go to university when I was young. Never had the opportunity. But even if you gave me a 4 year free pass, I would never go now! Between the "woke" filth and the moronic students, it would infuriate me! What a waste!

Part of the problem is the entire system of tenure. I am not in the teaching profession, so I don't know how it originated or all the details of how it works. What I do know is that nobody is entitled to a guaranteed job. You should have your job only as long as you are doing it well.
