HOW I HATED THAT MOVIE! I avoided it for a long time because 1) it didn't seem of interest and 2) the endless hype made me want to run the other way because nothing can live up to that. But after years of hearing about it I finally gave in, just to see what I was missing. I will grant that I'm sure the visuals lost a lot seeing it on a computer screen at home rather than in the theater. But I don't watch movies for the visuals. I watch movies for the story being told. I looked up my comments on it. Here's what I wrote at the time: "This has got to be the most rabidly anti-military, anti-American, anti-business, anti-progress, anti-HUMAN, militant environmentalist, pro-pagan worship piece of leftist propaganda I have EVER seen put to film! Honestly, by the last hour and especially the half hour I kept hitting the 10 second fast forward button and reading the captions, it was that unbearable."

I've honestly never cared much about (or even noticed) special effects. As you say, the story is what's important. I've been watching Classic Doctor Who. The effects are laugh-out-loud bad sometimes. People in ridiculous monster costumes that probably wouldn't even scare a 5 year old. Props that look like they were made by a kid for a school project. Fight scenes where you can see there's not even physical contact and the person falls down. But I don't care. And many fans don't care. Not all the eps are at the same level. Some are just bad. But generally speaking, the stories are fun and the characters are enjoyable. The other stuff should be secondary.
