  28. My blanket sympathy for homeless people (or people claiming to be homeless) has gone down markedly in recent years. I've offered people food - wrapped up, not even touched - and have been turned down in the most nasty way. I will never forget being at a park. I had half an Arby's sandwich that was way too big for me to eat in one sitting. It was a hot summer day and I had planned to be out there for a while. Someone taking it would have done ME a favor because it would have quickly spoiled if I'd been out in that heat for long. I offered to an obviously homeless man nearby. I even showed him that it was wrapped and I hadn't touched that half of it. It wasn't like I was giving him chewed off food, like a dog. He had the nerve to ask me, "What kind of sandwich is it?" I can't recall what it was, but when I told him, he said, "Oh, I don't eat that." And in such a nasty tone! Not even a, "Thank you for offering." I may not know how it is to be homeless. but I do know how it is to be broke and hungry. Even food you don't usually like tastes wonderful when you're genuinely hungry. I've offered people food when I didn't have any money to give and have been rejected in that same nasty way. I remember being outside a train station begging, literally begging, a man to take some food. He looked awful. Whatever his problems were, he was not faking it. He was in real need. He didn't want it! I couldn't believe it. I kept saying, "Are you sure? I haven't even touched it. It's still wrapped. See?. Please take it." Nope. I went home, stunned.
