  2. 1 cube tall and 1cube wide is still 1 cube. There is a way to manipulate calculations to make 2=1 but it's mostly a joke to get people to pay attention in class. I still remember that formulation. In mathematics, multiplication is used to save time and space on paper since the expansion would be addition so if you had 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 you would get 4, but you could get the same answer by saying 1 * 4. Division is the same thing, if you are subtracting a repeated value, it's a lot quicker to just divided by that specific value

Multiplying doesn't necessarily mean it has to increase, because you can go in the negative direction, by using a negative factor but it's the same idea of putting anything to the power of zero, as exponents are multiplication, and they all still result in the answer being one. Saying 1 * 1 means it should increase is silly because you don't need to multiply one by itself, one exists as itself which is why when you multiply it by itself it's still one. If you take a cube that is one unit tall and 1 unit wide and 1 unit deep, it's one cubic unit. Now if it's one of two cubes wide and 1 cubed deep of course it's 2 cubic units. This is extremely basic math If you think about multiplication being a condensed form of long addition, then you aren't increasing your work you are decreasing. Just like division is a quick way to do long subtraction because if you are repeatedly subtracting the same value over and over, it's easier to Simply divided by that specific value so 1+1+1+1+1 = 1*5
