I must agree that despite such similarities to the Western eye, Ukrainians and Russians are fundamentaly psychologicaly different. During my many trips to rural Russia or within rural Ukraine, that difference was really pronounced in villages. There was an attractive "It's mine" attitude in a look of Ukrainian households and eyesoring "I don't care" in Russian. That difference articulates in many ways across all other behavioral, lifestyle, relationships, etc. contrasts.

That's true: the soviet society was very much penetrated by KGB informants on all levels: army, universities, companies, plants, etc. Even at my former, nowhere "strategic " workplace, everyone knew who was a "stuckach" or "knocker," meaning the person went to knock KGB doors to deliver information. My colleagues used to get completely silent when this person suddenly joined our smoking circle during breaks. The guy never smoked and stayed near suffering the smoke, just hoping to pick up some worthwhile.
