  1. "They undid things like democratic rule, liberalism, capitalism, property rights, better education standards, and civic nationalism. This was done due to lingering resentment of colonialism" - quite sure that at least some leaders at that time were interested in keeping own position at the first place, and decided to use resentment as a way to keep power (by switching from democracy with constant elections to soviet model with single ruler). It is just a suggestion, i am not an expert in Africa and never visit it.
