The thing is that Ukrainian oil and gas are depleted 50+ years ago, it was barbarically used by Moscow to create soviet heavy industry after WW2. One of the first gas pipelines in USSR was from Carpathian to Moscow (Dashava - Kyiv - Moscow). Although there are shelf oil and gas in Black sea and deposits of shale gas, but it is nothing comparing to russian deposits. This is pure colonial war, russian lowlifes want to prove themself as strong and modern country, that can split world in half with USA and rule on ex-soviet territory.

@bobgnarley1 no, that's conspiracy theory. The real trigger is that Ukraine as country was drifting into EU, and events in 2004 showed it. Same about Georgia, russians were pissed that they are loosing influence in Georgia and decided to change government and occupy territory in 2008.

@sagisli that is insane conspiracy theory. If we are talking about gas and oil, the best target in the world is Venezuela. Not to mention that after Crimea russians are under sanctions and can't get modern technologies to mine oil and gas; there are way more bigger deposits inside russia; russians lost premium EU market for gas and oil, it takes no sense to fight for resources you can't sell or use. The reality is very primitive - russians invaded Ukraine due to aggressive ideology, in attempt to restore former "glory" of soviet union.

@PLTommia the "contracts" you are talking about is in reality are negotiations about shale gas, and the only reason why Ukraine started this activity is so called "gas war" - in 2005 russians were upset of first Maidan (2004) and EU-oriented government of Ukraine as a result and decided to change government in Ukraine by increasing gas price (using gas as a weapon, same way as they did in 2022 with Europe). Since 2004 russians tried to pressure Ukraine to remain in russian orbit, despite the fact that a lot of people in Ukraine (more than 50%, majority of young generation) at that time were willing to eventually join EU. Events: 1) 2004, pro-russian candidate in president of Ukraine lost due to mass protests after falsifications of elections (first Maidan). The result of this protests: re-elections, pro-russian candidate fails to win. 2) 2005, russians tries to change government in Ukraine by gas war and trading restrictions. The strategy is next: "vote for pro-russian forces and you will get a discount for gas and gasoline" 3) 2008, russian invasion into Georgia and occupation of it's territory. Motivation is the same - to replace democratic and EU-oriented government of Georgia with pro-russian marionettes (and it worked). At that time Ukraine helped Georgia with weapons for protection. 3) 2010, president election in Ukraine. Unfortunately, very corrupted pro-russian candidate becomes the president of Ukraine. 4) 2011, mass protests in russia after falsification of elections (similar to Maidan in 2004). Failed. 5) Autumn of 2013, mass protests in Ukraine agains pro-russian president Yanukovich solution not to sign required for integration with EU documents and siding with russians (second Maidan). 6) 2014, russians occupied Crimea and tried to occupy russian-speaking regions of Ukraine (east and south). Do you see anything related to "gas and oil deposits" in this chain of events? As i told you previously, it is all about russian political control over Ukraine (and other countries) in attempt of restore soviet union. In 2022, russians decided to do full-scale invasion in Ukraine after realisation in 2020 that Zelenskiy will not sign any deal with russians that harms Ukraine's national interests (and there is no chance that pro-russian politics will win during next elections). Same thing about russian aggression against Georgia in 2008.

Do you know that russians do not have own technology to do that, and since 2014 sanctions forbid selling such technologies to them? Do you know that oil and gas deposits in Ukraine are nothing comparing to deposits of oil and gas on russians territory? This war is not about resources or money, the reason of this war is absolutely moronic - russians want to "restore" former glory and power of soviet union by occupying Ukraine and Belarus. And it is not a theory, russian politics and propagandists said it many times. You can find same information on this channel, old generation are re-telling official russian propaganda and very nostalgic about soviet union.

@macobuzi it is not true. First of all, you are talking about shelf deposits on Black see and shale gas. Since 2014 russians occupied deposits on Black see, Ukraine had no control over it. Second, almost all countries on Black see also have own deposits on the shelf. Shale gas is expensive, there are zero mines of this type in Ukraine. Not to mention that many countries in the world have shale gas deposits, including russia. Turkey, for instance, also a threat to russians business because it has oil and gas deposits in Black see and can transport it to EU. Do we expect that crazy russians will invade every country that has deposits and can sell gas and oil? Third, russians deposits are way more bigger comparing to Ukraine, including low-maintanance deposits.

@brucewillis2 i completely disagree about gas and oil. First of all, russians want to take the control over whole Ukraine, ultimate goal is to restore soviet union. Second, they want to keep already occupied regions, because loosing previously occupied territories is weakness and can end badly for russian government. Third, in 2014, after Crimea, russians tried to occupy regions that have a lot of russian-speaking people (east and south of Ukraine). The goals were to occupy as mach as possible, to reach Moldova (read about russian occupied territory of Moldova) and cut Ukraine off the Black sea. All this three things are directly expressed by many russian politics and propagandists. And final thing. How much oil and gas deposits russains captured in 2008 in Georgia? How many oil and gas deposits are under russian control in occupied part of Moldova? Zero?

@Carlito84Qc no, it is you have no idea about the topic and russians in general. Example. East of Ukraine is occupied by russians since 2014. This region has some coal deposits and operating coal mines. After occupation, russians didn't invest any money into mines and eventually closed 80% of them. Why? It is good resource, few years ago it was in hight demand in China. Could you please give me at least one example of effective maining of any resource in occupied by russians region of Ukraine, Moldova or Georgia?

By the way, this conspiracy theories was popular 20-30 years ago about USA. At that time is was less silly, at least is capable of mining resources.
