There is a russian joke about this: Morning, russian officer after heavy drinking last evening noticed that his adjutant is cleaning vomit from his uniform. Officer remembers that he vomited on himself, but don't want to look as drunkhead and says: - Damn corporal X, yesterday we had a drink and he vomit on my uniform! Adjutant smiles and answers: - Sir, he also s*it in your pants! Keep in mind that russians are always blame USA, EU, Britain or anyone else except themself.

Ā @jopettiĀ at least half or russians are not aware about it.

No, it is the way how russian state propaganda "explained' occupation of Crimea in 2014. They never say that Crimea was occupied or annexed, they say next: Crimea returned home, it was decision of local people and it is "returning" because 100 years ago Crimea was part of russian empire. This language is russian "newspeak", this phrase implied that Crimea belongs to russians and in 2014 russians returned Crimea back. Same way they describe the war in Ukraine: russian state propaganda always use word "liberation" instead of "occupation".

Ā @Martin-bx1etĀ in this case russians are using own "newspeak", it is definitely not about guilt. About "gifts" - it is total nonsense and pure russian propaganda. First of all, it was political decision, based on national (majority of locals in Crimea were Ukranians at that time) and economical (Crimea was tightly coupled to Ukraine's infrastructure). Look at national identity maps at the start of 20 century. North of Crimea was populated by Ukrainians. By they, Moscow took parts of soviet Ukraine few times and joined them to russian, but for some reason it is not considered as "gifts" by russians: 1) Voronez and Belgorod are native Ukrainian territories, russians took some part of from Ukraine during soviet times and made it part of russia. 2) Krasnodar is native Ukrainian territory, locals forger own true identity due to oppression of Ukrainian language and culture. 2) After WW2, russians took part of Ukraine to create Moldova in it's current borders.

They are not, but this propaganda will fall deep and become part of their identity. New russian generation will know all the reasons why they should hate EU, USA, Ukraine etc.
