@asynchronicity it never was an issue before 2014, the problem is that russians want to prove themself by capturing territories (in 2014 about 85% of russians approved occupation of Crimea, in fact they approved start of was with Ukraine).

It is not about oil or gas deposits or any other type of resources. They want to restore soviet union and want to occupy all former soviet countries. The plan was to capture the whole Ukraine by fast war, it failed and now russians are fighting only because russian government and military do not want to hold responsibility for failure and consequences of defeat.

@lafej7439 it is a wishful thinking, spreader by anti-war russians. In reality, 85% of russians approved occupation of Crimea in 2014 (according to Levada, independent russians sociology company). Now, at least 25% of russians want war till victory and will be offended by ANY peace. At least half of russians do approve peace but agains leaving territory of Ukraine. There is a special term for it - schizofascism.

@birdick1307 how about red flags with star on military technique of russian army? Why russians are using soviet names of Ukrainian cities, despite official renaming to pre-soviet? If you are good as you think, you probably know that at some moment (after Stalin become in charge) soviet union begin to incorporate symbols and practices of former empire. For example, language politics switched from liberal (it was Lenin's attempt to repel national movements for independency) to forcing russian language (as it was in empire) and repressions agains national cultural elite. Majority of russians (old generation) dream about personal expirience in soviet times (when the grass was greener and trees taller), they don't care about empire.

Too late to worry about, it is complete mess. Even russian political emigrants (anti-war opposition) live in alternative reality and insist that only one person - putin - is to blame. In alternative reality of anti-war russians, russian army consists of clones. Zero accountability.

The thing is next: a lot of russians died in attempt to occupy Ukraine, and the only way for putin to avoid this problem is victory (or never-ending war). Otherwise russians will start asking questions. By the way, years of state propaganda turned at least 25% of russians into real fascists, they want to occupy Ukraine completely and will be offended by any peace.
