Russia resembles Imperial Russia and the USSR because they have the same problems. 1 no geographical feature, other than the Carpathians to protect their western border 2 need to make the western rich part pay for the east so you have somewhere to comeback from after invasion. 3 a history that tells everyone that the only thing worse than their oppressive government is invasion from the west.
