Orwell was a great writer and thinker. It is on his supporter for socialism that I part ways with him. His ideas about money and capitalism are naive at best. Remember that Marx called money stored up dead labor and meant it in a derisive way. This is just plain stupid. Without a way to "store up" the fruits of one's labor, you end up with feudalism, and real slavery. That is what has been the case in all the countries where socialism has been tried, especially the more extreme examples such as the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, Nazi Germany and Venezuela. Without a market to allocate resources and a medium of exchange which is also store value, there is nothing but totalitarianism. His pipe dream of democratic socialism has never taken hold.
