  1. As far as Iran goes, the western countries have no leverage on them. No, the reason they are starting to pull away is because Russia has supported the Arabs in the matter of some islands in the Persian (or Arabian) Gulf which Iran claims. This is stupid on Russia's part, since the Arabs are certainly not going to provide them with arms.

  2. I am wondering why something like the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) has not been set up in Ukraine. The Flying Tigers were actually set up by the US to help protect China prior to US involvement in WWII. In the Korean War, Soviet pilots flew active combat missions. In the Vietnam War Soviet pilots acted as instructors "in country", but don't seem to have flown combat missions. So, the idea that is would somehow be escalatory or unprecedented to have US or other NATO personnel either fly missions, maintain jets, or train Ukrainians in Ukraine is historically unsupported.
