Don't make a big deal about troops being sent into a war zone they knew nothing about. That is just plain stupid. It is also the norm for troops to be sent to areas they "know nothing about". There was an old, frankly anti-war, poster that sums it up. It went something like "Join the Army. Travel to distant exotic lands. Meet interesting, exotic people, and kill them." US troops sent to Europe in WWI and WWII were not in general "world travelers". My father is a good example. He was from western New England. Before the war he had never flown in a plane or been in an ocean-going ship. He was sent to the Pacific. It was not fun, but he did well. After the war he would not fly or take a ship. In fact, he forwent some work opportunities because of this. Then there was Korea and Vietnam. How many Midwesterners do you think had seen such mountainous terrain or jungles? Even in the era of the volunteer army this is the case. How many US or European troops had experience in the desert do you think?

@istvanglock7445 That is true in general today. But it was not really true at the start of the current millennium. There were lots of lessons learned and lots of equipment issues even in the Iraq and Afghan wars at the beginning. That was not very long ago.
