  1. I love that you reference Gogol the way you do. When I read that book, I had the same revelation. Nothing has changed. China is much the same. Neither Russia nor China is going to turn into a liberal democracy when their current regimes fall. It is the culture, not the individuals. People from both countries do well in the outside world. Take the cases of Germany and Japan. They did not turn into liberal democracies because of internal dynamics. It was imposed from outside after a devastating defeat. No one in the west has any interest in taking over Russia and China. Russia has lots of natural resources, but they are in very inhospitable areas. That and their farmland is poor. China is worse off. They have few natural resources and poor farmland. That and there are all those Chinese and Russians there. The future looks bleak for both.
