  1. The comment at the end just amazes me. All I have been hearing in the press and the pundit community indicates that Russia has become a vassal state of China. That people see the CCP playing a compliant role in the relationship goes against that narrative. I can believe it, but the leasing deal is not enough to prove it. It is a financial transaction, and it is not unusual for financial firms to take losses today to avoid bigger losses down the line. This is colloquially called "cutting your losses". It makes sense for the party cadres since all of them, from Mao on trained in the Soviet Union, while that lasted. What irks me is your claim about the Chines people preferring Russia over the west. The big difference between China and Russia is that Russia is self sufficient in natural resources and has more nukes and a more advanced military. Any shift away from the west and towards Russia would see China playing the same subsidiary role it does today. Something to ponder.
