Fundamental reforms to expand the freedom and rights of its citizens? The CCP? Come on man! This whole thing is going to fall apart and top CCP officials who can jump ship will. They have already parked trillions of dollars overseas. Some of them will become part of one of the warlord cliques that could emerge. The rest will meet their demise. The CCP has ensured that no strong democratically inclined leader has or could emerge. Remember Tiananmen Square? That is really what is in store for China, unfortunately.

China befriending the US? What makes the Chinese think the US would want to reciprocate. This is naivete on a grand scale. The original opening to China was a strategic move in the Cold War meant to counter the Soviet Union. The response to the reform and opening up was a financially driven move to take advantage of China's low wages and vast market. Well, the labor costs, on a productivity adjusted scale, are no longer low. With China's demographic and economic collapse, the "vast" market is quickly drying up. With the lack of respect for law and order and personal freedoms it is no longer viable for western firms to do business in China. The base reason China could participate in global supply chains was the US led, rules-based international order. China has openly stated that it wants to overtake the US both economically and militarily. Knowing the history of the US is that something that would play well in Peoria (look it up)? With China's well-known vulnerabilities the US would not even have to breath hard to strangle China. I am not advocating that but remember that there are several other countries who could do that as well. More than one has territorial disputes with China. No, by installing Xi as leader of the CCP, an irredentist Marxist-Leninist-Maoist, China has sealed its doom.
