Peace through strength. The more capable you are the less likely you are to be attacked is actually correct. The problem is, who would attack China? The only ones with a motive to do so are the Russians. Frankly, China has poor farmland, limited natural resources (especially in relation to its size and needs) and all those Chinese. Who is going to attack a country like that? If there is a war and it does not go nuclear then what will happen is that China will be blockaded. This will result in, as Peter Zeihan likes to point out (and I agree with him) rapid deindustrialization (months) and mass starvation (within a year). The thing is that it would not take much to effect a blockade, and it doesn't have to be done close to China. One of the military reasons for China to want to take Taiwan is to break out of the stranglehold of the first island chain. This might be good for its navy, but only for a short period of time.
