Class? What is all this talk about "class". I thought China was a communist utopia. I saw a talk given by George W. Bush, after he was president. At one point he mentioned that he asked all world leaders he met as president one question: what keeps you up at night. When he met Hu Jintao the answer he got was finding jobs for millions of people every year. Xi seems to have forgotten this. The reason it was so important was to ensure social stability. It is only capitalism that breaks down class barriers and allows for personal growth. This has been true since the opening of the country. I have a relative who is an engineer and was often in China working with a well educated Chinese colleague. What really struck him was that his colleague's less educated brother (only high school) had started several businesses and was much wealthier. He had that entrepreneurial spirit and drive one often sees in Chinese one meets outside of China. This applies to ethnic Chinese both born in China and abroad.
