I think that the issue of the one year showing an uptick, followed by a further decline, is important. Not to the issue of marriages alone, but to the understanding of trends in economy and society. Making a projection based on one data point in a time series amounts to statistical malpractice. I see this all the time, especially by government officials, economists and financial analysts. The thing is these people actually often have the statistical training to know better. They choose to ignore the science for their own aims.
