It is good to see that people are starting to pay attention to the treatment of labor in China. Between that and the pollution issue, what companies have done is to export practices that they would not accept at home. It is true that the Chinese are directly responsible for the abuses, but this is facilitated by western investors and companies. I actually ran into an example that melds both of these problems. I was at a meeting where a Chinese industrialist, a family firm, was in the US soliciting business. One American who wanted a product made in China was asked if he wanted air filtration in the plant to protect the workers. If he said yes that would increase the cost. He said no.
