  1. How does a society come back from such moral degradation? The CCP was just following the Soviet model, where many of the cadres were trained. Look at Russia today. Same thing. Those who believe that such a populace is going to create a liberal democracy after the fall of the CCP are fooling themselves. It took Taiwan fully 40 years to democratize and they had a deep connection with the west. Don't forget that Chaing and Mao were basically two of the several warlords that appeared out of the fall of the Qing dynasty. I don't know the details, but I have read that China, with its long imperial history really only had a few centuries total of true central control. Once central authority weakens the local powers, not democracies, appear. Even Sun Yat-sen was a socialist. Democracy was something that would come after the nationalists cemented full control of the country in his mind. We will never know, but I wouldn't bet money on it happening.
