  1. The US is rapidly reindustrializing. The policy is also to stress trade with countries that share US values. China does not fit into this scheme. A lot of people talk about the complex supply chains. They also talk about the amount of low-end labor and labor price differentiation. This is a chimera. Redeveloping those supply chains, changing the methods of production and design of products and automating is something that the US and the developed west excels at. Just look at how quickly the move to China occurred. Do you really think it will take longer to redirect? Come on man! The west, especially the US, opened up trade to other countries primarily to build an alliance against the Soviet Union. Guess what, the Soviet Union broke up 30+ years ago. Another thing about the western ideas of trade with developing countries is that those countries would buy high end goods from the developed countries, develop themselves, and then become more like equal trading partners. Guess what? China did not get the memo. One more thing to recall is that in the early 20th century the US share of world manufacturing was actually higher than China's is now.
