The reaction of the second speaker to the first speaker is truly revealing. The Chinese truly know nothing about free speech. The first speaker's remote may be inappropriate as far as the second speaker is concerned. But the fist speaker is not an official and is not expressing government policy. So, the second speaker attacks the first speaker for making "inappropriate" remarks. He does not engage with the content of what the first speaker said. This is what is really "inappropriate". In any kind of debate on issues this is not useful. We call it an ad homonym argument. Of course, we run into this in social media all the time, whether it is in China or in the west. As to the content, if China did send troops to Russia, then China would be over. Done! We are talking about deindustrialization and mass starvation, and that is not an exaggeration.

@zoeherriot Well, that is the dumbest thing I have ever read. You are taking the text of the First Amendment literally. That is indeed what it says. On the other hand, the courts in the US have expanded this to everything from pornography to corporate speech. Frankly, unless speech is maliciously libelous, it is permitted in the US. Do a little research. Another thing, and it is a practical matter, is that you want to know what people are thinking. Suppressing people, you don't agree with does nothing to stop them thinking it and deprives you of knowing what they think. That is both stupid and dangerous. As I said in my original comment, engaging with their ideas is the best course of action.

@zoeherriot Well, your first point is precisely what I said. Work on your reading comprehension skills. Your second point is correct as well. As long as the government is not doing it, any media platform, from newspapers to social media, can decide not to carry it. In the past, what people did (in the dark days before social media) was just to find another outlet. I never said you are supposed to be heard. What I said is that denying people have those ideas by closing your ears (eyes, mind) is perilous. If you deny that people have those ideas, and turn out to be the majority, for example, you could well be in a lot of trouble. I find a lot of things reprehensible that are said, but you cannot ignore that people think or say them and still be well informed.
