The comments about the "rulers" and their "family" structure harkens back to medieval times. I am thinking about Europe, but I believe it also applies to China. It was common for aristocrats to have mistresses. In fact, this was often an open "secret". This just reinforces my belief that any authoritarian regime reverts to a type of aristocracy. In China you have the princelings. In post-Soviet Russia you have the same phenomenon in the nomenklatura. Another good example is North Korea. Xi's attempts to steer the country back to socialism, or communism, whichever term you prefer, are just so much window dressing. It is bound to fail. Will we see a democratic revolution, or will some communist leader throw off the ideology and just become an in-fact emperor. Kind of like Putin in Russia trying to revive the czarist ethos in Russia.

@popajoekiller Perhaps Taiwan has a claim to China. I heard on a channel of news about China, which has since been deleted, that the people of Shanghai wanted to disengage from CCP led China and associate with Taiwan. I don't know the veracity of this, or how widespread it is, but it makes sense. The coastal areas have always had tensions with the powers of the northern plains. Due to their geography, they have always looked outward.

The comments from the first woman are very intriguing. I was also struck that she was wearing a Kangol hat with the logo prominently displayed. Isn't that a western brand? Aren't all westerners evil? Seriously, though, her expectation that a person must be completely formed before having children is to ignore biology. Children are not there to be intellectually developed (although that is a good thing), but are there carry on the family, nation and species. Chinese youth seem to have forgotten this. Their education is seriously lacking, My grandparents immigrated to the US from a poor part of Greece over 100 years ago. The way it worked was that the men came over, established themselves and sent back to "the old country" for a wife. This sounds like similar to what we hear out of China today (I mean the establishing oneself). The difference is that in the US there was opportunity and growth. Of course, this was also the case in China until soon after Xi came to power. See the connection there?

@jfverboom7973 Fair point. I did not mean to stress the immigration aspect. Looking at it, I probably could have left that out, perhaps. What I am trying to get across is the parallel between marriage customs in China and Europe from a century ago. As I understand it a man must have a job, car and a home to attract a bride in China. There has been lots of discussion about this on this channel as well as others.

@clown6507 I fully agree. India also has a very multicultural environment. This gets messy at times, but it is also a strength. India, being an open society will grow and adapt in their own way, as most societies do. It is interesting that you mention the role of arranged marriages. My neighbors are Indian (born in India but now US citizens). Their children, a son and daughter, were born in the US. I am not sure about the daughter, but they arranged a marriage for the son. Actually, they picked one girl, and she came over from India to meet him and it didn't work out. Then they found a second one. That one took. She is beautiful, smart (had a MS in EE and now has a PhD). They have wonderful children (aren't they all). Back in the third quarter of the last century of the last millennium, when I first went to university, my two best friends (we shared everything, sometimes even girlfriends) were from India. The parents of one went back to India while he was an undergrad (his father was a diplomat). He had a long string of failed affairs and would often say that he was tired of it and just wanted his parents to arrange a marriage. Strangely, theirs was not an arranged marriage. They met at university in the UK. I have really lost contact with him, but I do know that he got married and had two sons. I do not know if it was an arranged marriage.

@conkon4267 Knowledgeable demographers totally disagree with you. The question to answer is, what do you mean by enough. The issue is sustainability of the economy and population. By those measures, China is in trouble. There are lots of resources on this online. Look it up. It might enlighten you.
