There are many great public schools in this country. The issue in minority communities has been a problem at least since the 1970s. When I lived in Wash., DC, there was an expose in the Washington Post about city students who could not read when they graduated. Then, whenever standards were tightened up minority activists, many parents, cried out. We need standards. Politicians who cannot stand up for this are just abrogating their responsibilities.
