The Senator has it exactly right. Get government out of everything unless no one else would do it. There are lots and lots of areas where government workers are used where a private company would do much better. This includes some areas that are "traditional" government functions. The fact is that those government workers are just employees. Money is collected through taxes and fees and paid out to workers. The problem with many government workers is the structure in which they operate, not necessarily the people themselves. The reality is a lot is already done by private contractors. These companies, generally, have to compete. In addition, the employees in the private sector tend to be smarter and better. They have to be. They generally get paid more as well. I spent a lot of time in the aerospace and defense industry. I was working on a NASA project in the 1980s (the space station). I was going down to a NASA facility to meet with some of the NASA employees. I said to our deputy program manager that I was a bit concerned. In those days we still wore suits to work. When I met with the NASA employees before I observed that their attire was not up to the standards we had. I was considering dressing down. The deputy program manager said you will not be able to convince them you are not paid more. You have to convince them you are worth it.
