  1. The division between the parties was endemic throughout American history. You should try reading about it sometime. The convergence between the parties was a product of WWII and the prosperity that followed, when the US was 50% of the world economy (because we and allies had, by necessity destroyed the rest). The convergence you assume was only a small portion of our history. Get educated, why don't you.
