  1. The homeless crisis started decades ago when we stopped institutionalizing people because of perceived problems with state mental institutions. This aversion to taking people who are a danger to themselves and society as a whole off the streets is killing our cities. Perhaps the cities don't deserve to be saved. Perhaps we will move to other forms of social organization. Who knows? Whatever the case, we need to have a real national conversation on the topic.
