Good point at the beginning. Afghanistan was never really a country. It's borders were created by the British. I can think of another country created by the British that became a problem to us. Iraq is another such abortion. We have "states" around the world that were creations of the colonial powers. Please don't call the US one. We NEVER engaged in the type of colonialism that the major European powers did. These states group incompatible "nations" together without any concept of statehood. This is why we have the problems we do.
