  1. Everyone gets the rare earth thing wrong. First, despite the name, rare earth metals are not "rare". We were mining and refining them long before the opening up to China. China processes them. The processing is a very "dirty". So, like many other things, we exported our pollution to China. They do not even enforce their own laws, so it is cheaper. Processing is now being built in the US for obvious reasons. Because of our environmental laws it is more expensive and complex than what China does. The same is true for lithium, by the way. What Trump is doing by talking about rare earths from Ukraine is finding something that is of value and can offset any support that the US has given and might give in the future. Zalenski should be jumping on the opportunity. The mood in the US is shifting. It is clear now that the Ukrainians cannot push the Russians completely out of Ukraine. They are also losing a lot of people. Have you ever wondered why we don't see casualty figures from Ukraine of Ukrainians, only Russians? The people there know it is bad. Both Ukraine and Russia were in demographic decline before the war and it is much worse now. I just look at all the ads on YouTube and in my Gmail feed for Ukrainian women, and now more and more for Russian women.
