Well, I think the state idea is better. This was actually put forward during the independence referenda for Quebec. It would actually involve creating multiple states, not just one. At least the US has a constitutional process for welcoming in new states, so nothing on that front would have to be done. We even have the example of Texas which was an independent republic for a decade before joining the US. There are issues of regulation and others that would need to be addressed. It needs to be done in a way that is established, not in some new way as Mr. O'Leary suggests.
