Wonderful analysis. The political considerations were quite important. Don't forget that the US did not voluntarily get into WWII (or WWI) early (until attacked or declared war on) partly because of the American public's view of the British. The feeling in the US was that supporting the British would only allow them to retain their empire, which was not something they wanted. As in WWI, in WWII the US would eventually field the larger and better equipped force. This is not to minimize the British (or French in WWI) but was a result of larger population an industrial capacity. Don't forget that in 1900 the US was producing half the industrial goods in the world. In WWII, I expect this was probably of the same order. Monty was actually a good general, but as you (and many others) point out, he was hard to live with. I think Eisenhower did the best he could. Still, the outcome of the war was never really actually in doubt by the end of 1944. Between the allies there more than enough force to finish Germany. It was only a matter of when.
