@mito88 On that you are correct. In WWI and WWII, the early US neutrality was based on the UK being an imperial power. This was the stance of the populace, It was only our leaders that wanted to take sides. Frankly, although we have somewhat different vires, I have enjoyed the discussion. I hope you take it in the same way.

A nation's first responsibility is to their own citizens. We didn't go to war to protect other people. We went to war because we were attacked and needed to protect ourselves. This even applied to the Germans before they declared was against us. Even in WWI, the Germans were attacking our ships before we went into the war.

@mito88 They were sinking our ships as well. If they had only sunk British ships we probably have not been involved.

@mito88 We first decided to support Germany's enemies with material. The only way to get that materiel to those countries was by ship. The Germans wanted to sink the ships to stop that. I don't see how you can say we were not doing it to protect ourselves. We were losing sailors as well.

@mito88 Well, I think we agree it was an undeclared war. But, you are taking away Germany's agency. They could have left the US ships alone. It was their choice. One always has that choice. In the end, the consequences for Germany was terrible. It is akin to the situation with the Soviet Union. It was their choice to invade. The Soviets were even giving the materials they needed to fight, such as oil. It's the choices one makes.
