I do not want to condone this action. But, just look at the situation at the end of the war. The Soviets had suffered the bulk of the causalities. This was pre-Cold War. The West had made an agreement. It was not unusual to repatriate people after a war. Where were these people to go? There was no UN Convention on Human Rights. This would only come at the end of 1948. So, what law was broken by abiding by an agreement made by the Allied combatants in early 1945? One of the problem that the Jews had during the war, when there we immigrant restrictions in many countries, was that many were consigned to stateless status. They were trying to find somewhere to go to, but had no status. We have changed our way of thinking about these situations now, but as a historian, you need to look at the situation at the time.
