The Russians have not won all their wars. Recall the Crimean War, the Russo-Japanese War, WWI, and the Soviet Polish war in the 1920s. In all these situations they lost to smaller countries. In the last on that list, the Soviets were forced into "communism in one country", which was anathema to Communist ideology. In WWI they mobilized massive numbers of poorly trained and equipped troops. The Germans were breaking them and then helped foment a revolution. Russia lost massive amounts of territory. They only got back territory because the western powers defeated Germany. The main reason they won in WWII was support from the west, which was massive. They don't have that now.
