  2. Glad to hear Peter make the statement that Syria is a fiction. That is not said enough. In fact, Iraq is one as well. There are also many "nation states" in Africa that fit in the same category. All of this is the result of European imperialists drawing lines on maps for their own convenience. The biggest problem is that these are areas with long and complex histories with many competing groups. If you look at it, these are tribal societies. Until the international community addresses these issues such conflicts will persist. We need to address the issue of self-determination. Woodrow Wilson tried to address this after WWI and didn't get very far. The sanctity of international borders is the cause of the frictions we have experienced after WWI. In fact, it was a major contributing factor leading to WWII. A lot of people commented it at the time, by the way. The thing about it is that even in Europe we have similar situations, again the result of aftermath of WWI and the breaking up of empires. The two biggest examples Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. The former led to war. The latter, thankfully, was resolved peacefully.
