  1. Silicon Valley's rise has nothing to do with the current tech sector. Silicon Valley's initial rise, driven by hardware. led to the corporate software giants which led to the current crop of tech companies. I am not playing down these new tech companies, but your simplification of this ignores major factors. Many people do this, and that it why it has been so hard to set up similar locations outside of the US. The first phase Silicon Valley was juiced by government spending in Aerospace & Defense. Profits from this helped fund the second phase and so it goes. I have lived through almost all of this, although I have never lived in (or wanted to live in) California.
