How do we know what the fuel load was pre-settlement times? Do we know there were fewer fires. In the wild, fires are started by lightning strikes (I have seen them).

@johnwaterman2525 Since the forests were not managed pre-settlement, the only conclusion is that there was plenty of fuel and plenty of fires back then. Do we know what the frequency was?

@rylanrussell9595 Well, I started out in High Energy Physics and then switched to Computer Science. I think I know a bit about that. So, if you want to compare, look at the situation in Australia. They have areas that are "natural" and often burn. In fact, forest burns have a lot to do with the healthy evolution of forests.

@johnwaterman2525 Fair point. I still think it is a comparable situation, but I understand where you are coming from. That said, where do we have similar climate and flora composition that is in a primordial state?
