There is one thing that Peter leaves out about wind. Recyclability of the materials, especially the turbine blades, which are massive on the ones he is talking about. They are not, as far as I can tell, recyclable. I have seen a good bit of mention of the problem. Solar, by the way, is similar in this regard. So, if you take into account the life cycle carbon impact of wind, it may not be that great. Take an old coal plant and most of its parts can be recycled. That coal plant will last a lot longer as well.

You hit it out of the park with your explanation. Several years ago, I was working on a data center in a remote area. We were using a variety of power sources. We actually had a contractor with a control system that could handle diverse power sources. We could even set up parameters such as cost of each source to optimize operational cost of the system. This is all doable and it is not static.
