  1. Why is the Sahel significant from a global point of view? All the nation-states here are creations of the colonial era. These are tribal lands, not real nations. This is a hangover from European imperialism, which was preceded by Ottoman imperialism. I have even seen where some French officials have been talking about bringing back colonial/imperialism mode in the region. This is actually something Peter has talked about. Heck, and I know this is an aside, but it fits, all of Europe is not much different. Look at the countries that have split apart in Europe after the end of the Cold War and the withdrawal of massive numbers of American and Soviet troops. If things are allowed to take their natural course, there may be a few more. The Belgium situation seems to be flaring up again. Just look at the names of various regions that are not nation-states today. These have massively long cultural and ethnic heritages. I am particularly fond of Bohemia and Galicia (for silly personal reasons). Recently Viktor Orban was in Ukraine warning Zalenski to treat Hungarian speaking Ukrainians well. This was a region that "should have" been in Hungary if we are going on ethnic and linguistic lines. To net it out, all the effort the world is expending on keeping these places together in their colonial borders is just a waste of blood and treasure. If is the Great Game come back to life (look it up).
