I often say I miss the Cold War. I say that because I got to do a lot of very interesting research with basically unlimited budgets. Two of those research projects were part of SDI. The things we were doing were considered fantastical at the time. When we did demos and simulations, we made them very visual. The generals loved it. When the Patriots were first used against ballistic missiles in the Gulf War, there was a lot of doubt about whether the systems were actually effective. There may have been some issues, but these things evolve. Frankly the research never stops. The naysayers are always out there. By the way, the WSJ has an editorial today titled "Ronald Reagan Just Saved Israel From Iran’s Attack". Worth a read.
