Even considering the two world wars, many historians consider the second an extension of the first. The Prussian militarists were at least as ambitious as Hitler. Heck, Napolean was perhaps more ambitious than Hitler. I mention the rhyme aspect because today there is one big difference between the early 21st century and the first half of the 20th. it is specifically a topic that Peter emphasizes in his work. That topic is demographics. It applies to Japan as well as to western Europe. At that time all those countries had growing populations. That changes everything.
