Of course, you have to look at the early history of all these water developments in the West. The US can grow all it needs without using the deserts. That would mean giving up some foods, but these are not critical, no matter how desirable. The reason for all the dams and water projects was to enable the US to populate the areas, from Idaho on down to the Southwest, so that no one could come in and try to claim the region. There was little planning for what we have today.
