  1. The Marines, of course, do not have a massive R&D budget, but they do some. Many years ago, I was working on a satellite system. The ground control element, which had to be dispersed and varied, had an interesting requirement. It had to survive a nuclear blast nearby. Looking at the requirements, we asked the Air Force program office about it. It seems that the requirement was such that the system had to survive and the next operator to arrive would peel off the guy working there at time of the blast and continue operating the system. They said, yup. Well, it seems the Marines had developed such a terminal. They can be clever.

  2. Tomahawk cruise missiles use terrain matching guidance. This is far more robust than GPS, which can be interfered with.
